You're right. The exploits do exist, and they can be used to do some nasty things to your system. They tend to be fixed faster by virtue of the software being open-source, but more importantly they tend to be less severe because these *nix operating systems have a more secure design. They are secure by design, not by assurance that there are no chinks in the armour.
