PG2 allows you to white list IP addresses. If you don't want to do that you could close PG2, update NOD, and re-launch PG2. You don't have to choose.
To me, DRM is fine as long as it doesn't affect my experience and as long as it isn't super restrictive (e.g., SecuRom, StarForce, etc.). With Steam, I think being able to play your games on any computer is a good trade-off for not being able to sell your games.
