Who . . . Is . . . Hanksy?
By Mike Newman
Call us suckers but we love a good mystery (as long as it doesn’t involve Nicholas Cage). We try to solve every crime on Law & Order, we look for life’s meaning at the bottom of every bottle of booze (wow, that sounded depressing) and we’ve diligently scanned “Exit Through The Gift Shop” to see if we could unmask Banksy. Nada. Now, on the streets of the Lower East Side of NYC, we’ve found our latest puzzle . . . and it’s deliciously clever. Iconic images from the world’s most famous street-artist have started popping up with Tom Hanks’ mug on ‘em and they’ve got us wondering – Who is Hanksy? Check out the pics of Hanksy’s work and you’ll see many well-known Banksy pieces under the surface. The protestor heaving a bouquet of flowers is now a disheveled Hanks giving Wilson the Tom Brady treatment, the little girl’s lost balloon now has the actor’s kisser plastered on it, and, best of all, Hanksy is still out there armed with spray paint. Is it Banksy? Is it Tom Hanks himself? Is it that other kid from Big? We don’t know, but we do know we’re enjoying the mystery.
